In order to improve the co-ordination of coastal research at universities and to develop multi-disciplinary national and international co-operation Forschungszentrum Küste (FZK) was established in 1996. This centre is organized as a Joint Central Institution of the Leibniz Universität Hannover and the Technische Universität Braunschweig. For more than 25 years, institutes and research groups of both universities are working together in the topics of Coastal Engineering and Hydrodynamics.
The division of "Hydromechanics and Coastal Engineering" was founded in 1971 and since then it is one of four divisions of the Leichtweiß-Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources. Various experimental facilities at different scales are available at the division, however the twin-wave flume and the large 3D wave basin represent the most important facilities.
Founded in 1916, Ludwig-Franzius-Institute for Hydraulic, Estuarine and Coastal Engineering at the Leibniz University of Hanover is nationally and internationally well-known partner for scientific problems in the fields of hydraulics, river engineering, water road maintenance and planning, port operations and logistics, coastal protection, dike monitoring, flood control and risk management, environmental impacts of water engineering, tidal influences and offshore engineering.
The BAW is the technical and scientific federal authority of the BMVI. We are the central providers of consultancy and expert opinion services to the BMVI and the WSV relating to their waterways engineering tasks and in particular concerning their construction supervision responsibility for ensuring that all federal waterway structures and facilities comply with safety and other regulations.
The innovation society iTUBS mediates contacts between the economy and the institutes of the TUBS and advises on the design of research and development contracts. This gives industry and SMEs access to the resources (scientists and infrastructure) of the participating institutions.
